Why people ask for VELUX
- The warranty. VELUX backs their skylights, including the glass and, on many models, installation against leaks when installed by a pro. As an installer, we make sure it goes in to spec so that warranty holds.
- Solar and fresh-air models. VELUX makes fixed units, manual venting units, and solar-powered “Fresh Air” skylights that open and close with a remote and a rain sensor that closes them automatically.
- Factory glass options. Low-E coatings, laminated safety glass, and a range of blinds and accessories that are made to fit.
Fixed, manual, or solar?
A fixed VELUX is sealed glass for light only. A manual venting unit opens with a rod or crank. A solar “Fresh Air” unit opens with a remote, runs on a small solar panel so there is no wiring. Because of that solar panel, these units have historically qualified for a federal tax credit, ask us and we can point you to the current details. We will walk you through which model fits the room.
VELUX replacement
A lot of our VELUX work is replacing an old skylight, sometimes an old VELUX, sometimes another brand, with a new VELUX unit. If your existing curb and opening are sound, a like-for-like VELUX replacement is often straightforward. More on replacement here.
A common request: A homeowner wants a solar Fresh Air skylight over a kitchen so they can vent steam and heat with a remote. We size it to the opening, install to VELUX spec so the warranty holds, and set up the remote and rain sensor.
What it typically costs
A standard fixed glass VELUX runs in the same range as a standard replacement. Stepping up to a venting or solar-powered operable unit is a significant jump, often 3 to 4 times the cost of the fixed version, since you are paying for the motor, the remote, and the rain sensor along with the glass.
