When the glass in a custom skylight fails but the frame is still sound, you often do not need a whole new skylight, you need new glass. Replacing the glass in an existing custom unit is usually faster and costs less than rebuilding the entire skylight, and it is a core part of our glazing work.
A real example: one trapezoidal piece of glass in a custom skylight had shattered. We had a replacement piece custom made and tint-matched to the surrounding glass, then installed it in place of the broken one. The rest of the unit never had to come out.
This applies to custom architectural skylights only. Pyramids, ridgelites, octagons, and other field-built units can be disassembled, reglazed, and resealed. Factory-sealed skylights, VELUX units and acrylic dome skylights, are sealed into their frames at the factory and cannot be opened this way. Those need full unit replacement instead. When custom glass replacement is the right call
- A failed seal. Fog or moisture trapped between the panes that will not wipe away. The insulated glass unit has lost its seal and needs to be replaced.
- A cracked or broken pane in a frame that is otherwise solid, after impact, a branch, or foot traffic from another trade.
- An upgrade. Going from old single-pane or clear glass to modern low-E, laminated, or tinted glass for comfort and UV protection.
Why replace the glass, not the whole unit
Custom skylight frames, the pyramids, ridgelites, and double-pitch units, are built to last. When the structure is sound, replacing just the glass keeps the architecture you already have and saves the cost of fabricating a whole new unit. We measure the existing openings, order the right insulated glass, and swap it.
A typical job: A large ridgelite over a kitchen where two of the glass panels had fogged from failed seals while the rest were fine. We replaced the failed panels with new low-E insulated units matched to the originals, and left the frame in place. Far less than a new ridgelite would have cost.
When replacement of the whole unit is better
If the frame itself is damaged or corroded, or the design is failing, new glass alone will not solve it, and a full custom replacement is the better investment. We will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
