Skylights and roof openings are a way into a building. Burglar bars, security screens mounted at the skylight or roof opening, close that gap without giving up the daylight. For commercial buildings, and some residential ones, they are a straightforward layer of security on a part of the building people forget about.
Why secure a skylight
A skylight or roof hatch is often the least-watched entry point on a building. Ground-floor doors and windows get alarms and bars, while the roof gets nothing. For warehouses, retail, and any building storing valuable inventory, a skylight without security is an open question. Bars or a security screen answer it.
What we install
- Steel security bars or grates mounted at the skylight or opening, sized and spaced to block entry.
- Security screens that resist cutting and prying while still passing light.
- Interior or exterior mounting depending on the opening and the look you want.
Done right, security bars can double as a measure of fall protection on a commercial roof, though the two requirements are distinct, see fall protection.
Common request: A building that had a break-in through a roof skylight wants every rooftop opening secured. We fit steel bars at each skylight and hatch, sized to block entry while keeping the light.
What it typically costs
Roughly $300 to $600 per unit, depending on quantity and the curb situation. Bars installed on empty openings cost less. Most jobs involve removing the existing skylights, installing the bars, and reinstalling the skylights, which is more work and lands on the higher end of that range.
How it goes
Call us about the openings you want secured. We come look, recommend bars or screens, and give you an estimate.
